Video: Industry 5.0 all about 'human-led innovation'

Jill Jusko, our colleague at sister brand IndustryWeek, hosted Sarah Tilkens, a former GE Healthcare lean guru who now runs the KPI Lab, about why manufacturing now needs Industry 5.0.

Jill Jusko, editor at Smart Industry’s sister brand IndustryWeek, hosted an interesting-to-us guest last week on IW’s Production Pulse program: Sarah Tilkens, a former GE Healthcare lean guru who now runs the KPI Lab. And the two talked about “getting people back in the loop” and Industry 5.0.

Industry 4.0, the period we are in now, is still a vague concept to many in manufacturing. For many, it’s synonymous with industrial Internet of Things (IoT)—connected systems that draw data from machines to optimize industrial processes. Vibration monitoring using sensors installed to plant hardware to predict downtime for service intervals is an example of this.

Most agree, however, that Industry 4.0 mostly is a tech thing, not so much a human-centric concept. The thrust of the Industry 4.0 movement is technology such as machine learning, data collection, data-based decision modeling and data-driven process improvement.

“The problem (with Industry 4.0) is with the focus so much on productivity and efficiency. People became really, really burned out and disengaged,” Tilkens told Jusko during the program. “So, a lot of the systems became very rigid. They weren’t as flexible. They weren’t as creative. And I think that’s what led to … Industry 5.0, which again is all around human-led innovation.”
