Digital oilfield technologies enable communications to Rocky Mountain wellheads

Feb. 27, 2015

Field technicians working in the oil and gas industry are a tough breed used to harsh environments, but the IIoT is helping to make their work a little easier.

If you live anywhere that has snow this winter, you don’t even want to think about weather conditions in the Rocky Mountains right now, where travelers should expect sudden blizzards, high winds, and deep snowpack. Where if you’re planning to be outdoors overnight, you need gear that can handle –35 degrees or below.

Imagine having to travel through that type of terrain to reach remote wellheads, gather data and issue reports on each wellhead’s status. There has obviously got to be a better way to acquire that information, and with technology available through the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), there is.

Portable communications provider Terra Ferma and industrial networking, computing and automation solution manufacturer Moxa, along with MSI Tec, extended enterprise IT communications from the corporate offices out to the most remote and harsh industrial environments the oil and gas industries have to face. From in-the-field sensors at the very edge of the network all the way up to remote data acquisition and SCADA integration, Terra Ferma and Moxa are enabling the digital oil field across the globe, pushing industrialized Ethernet, wireless communications, embedded computing, and industrialized IP video out to the harshest environments the industry has to offer.

By enabling these advanced communications, technicians need to travel out to the wellheads less frequently. And when they do make the long, cold trek, they have more information about the status of the equipment and the problems it may be encountering, and are able to handle the necessary maintenance faster and more efficiently.
